During this Season of Gratitude……
In Remembrance of My Mother
— by Dr. Martha Eddy
"Rev. Dr. Margaret Ruth Eddy, would have turned 98 this Halloween. Although she lived only to 63, her passion for community service and wellness in East Harlem inspired me to create Moving For Life. Through our programs, we honor her legacy each day, reaching thousands affected by cancer, chronic illness, aging, and life’s challenges. From 1948 to 1990, she dedicated herself to empowering others. She was a pioneering pastor and counselor in East Harlem, launching women's health education programs, leading one of the first community counseling centers, and creating initiatives to help women take charge of their health and future.
Her work uplifted countless lives, fostering resilience and community. Moving For Life carries forward her mission, offering health education, movement, and emotional support that help ease pain, build confidence, and inspire healthy living for families across generations. Here, we continue the legacy of personal and embodied healing—a safe space for all to grow and thrive.
From MFL Instructors
“Each time I participate in Moving for Life or teach a Moving for Life, I feel a marked difference in my overall well-being during and after class. Moving for Life helps me access a healing state, where movement, breath, and grounding awareness combine to make healing not just a possibility, but something that is happening now. I am deeply grateful that Moving for Life’s gentle, effective approach to aerobic dance makes it accessible to so many, bringing ease and joy to each participant.
Thanks to the generous support of many donors, classes are available every day, both online and in person, for free. It's wonderful to share these classes with friends and family across distances, connecting through movement and mutual care.
I’m especially grateful to teach weekly online classes through Moving for Life’s website, engaging with unique participants who bring their energy and presence to class. Recently, I've had the pleasure of sharing Moving for Life’s benefits with students at Rockford Dance Company and Peak Fitness in Illinois, and it's inspiring to see the positive impact on people of all ages. Moving for Life brings together a vibrant community from diverse backgrounds, including participants, instructors, and staff. I am thankful to be part of this supportive network and for the opportunity to connect with others on a journey toward healing and well-being. Thank you, Moving for Life.”

Notes from the MFL Staff
“I have seen the positive impact Moving For Life has had on participants. Many folks have come up to me after a class to mention how great they feel in their body and how happy they are with their progress. Participants have also said how attending class is the best part of their week! It makes me feel special that I am part of such a valuable part of their healing and recovery.”

“I’ve only been with Moving for Life for a short time, but getting to know how passionate each of my colleagues are and reading the heartfelt letters from participants have already made this role incredibly rewarding. I love having the chance to support an organization doing such meaningful work, whether it’s through adding my tech flair to streamlining our organizational processes or crafting grant proposals that help sustain and grow our impact. Knowing my efforts contribute to our mission of health equity makes every day worthwhile”
